UWC Costa Rica Students Embrace Experiential Learning

In the spirit of our mission to cultivate in young people the passion and ability to serve humanity and our planet, UWC Costa Rica students have engaged in various experiential learning outings, embodying our commitment to learning from nature and from each other for a lifetime.

Art and Inspiration at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design

IB2 Visual Arts students recently visited the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, immersing themselves in exhibitions that resonated with our respect for nature. A guided tour and self-exploration allowed for deep engagement with the art, culminating in a meeting with UWC graduate Jorge Salavar. His insights into his creative process and the impact of UWC on his life provided invaluable inspiration. This experience enriched their artistic understanding and encouraged critical analysis of curatorial decisions, aligning with our Strategic Plan's focus on critical thinking and creative expression.

Exploring Ecosystems in the Talamanca Highlands

ESS/Sistemas students embarked on an "Experiential Outing" to the Talamanca Highlands, delving into the interconnectedness of human and natural systems. Through investigations in the Los Quetzales National Park, Cerro Buena Vista, and the "Paraiso Quetzal Eco Lodge," they witnessed firsthand community and change within ecosystems. They gained a deeper understanding of ecological diversity by comparing biotic and abiotic factors in the paramo and cloud forest ecosystems. Interviews with Park Ranger Karen Valle and Eco Lodge owner Jorge Serrano provided valuable insights into the challenges and successes of local communities interacting with the national park, fostering a sense of reciprocity and responsibility.

Cultural Immersion in Alajuela and Sarchí

Our Conociendo Costa Rica Alajuela trip immersed students in the region's rich culture. From the Espíritu Santo Coffee Tour in Naranjo to the Zarcero Central Park and church, they experienced the essence of Costa Rican life. A Sarchiseño painting workshop with Don William Valverde, one of the last 20 artisan painters in Sarchí, provided a unique opportunity to learn about traditional art forms, connecting students with local artisans and preserving cultural heritage.

Literary Exploration through Theater

A theatrical adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" provided a multidisciplinary learning experience. This engaging performance sparked dialogue across subjects like Language and Literature, Theater, and Theory of Knowledge. By exploring themes of symbolism, ethics, and the role of art in transmitting knowledge, students deepened their understanding of the human condition and the power of storytelling.

Community Action Weekend: Planting Trees for a Sustainable Future

In line with our Sustainability Framework, students participated in a Community Action Weekend with the ASADA de Carrizal in Alajuela. Collaborating with ASADA members and students from UTN, they planted over 50 trees to preserve water resources and contribute to a healthier planet. This hands-on experience instilled a sense of environmental stewardship and demonstrated the power of collective action.

These diverse experiences exemplify UWC Costa Rica's commitment to holistic education and fostering empathy, reciprocity, and accountability in our students. By engaging with art, nature, culture, and community, they develop the passion and ability to make a positive impact on the world.
