At
COP28, the global stage for climate action, UWC Costa Rica alums continue to lead as voices for change, representing the spirit of our principles and values and a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and a healthier planet. Among them was
Andrés Bronnimann, Class of 2013, a Costa Rican storyteller and filmmaker known for his impactful work on the
UWC Costa Rica Stories video series. Andrés collaborated with the delegation from the Republic of Palau at COP28, capturing and sharing vital stories that spotlight the urgency of climate action.
This year, Andrés was joined by over 60 UWC alums and community members worldwide at COP28, strengthening the presence and impact of the
United World Colleges (UWC) network in global climate discussions. UWC Costa Rica is honored to support our alum community’s continued development and to witness their contributions to a more sustainable future.
A UWC Costa Rica Alum at the Forefront of Climate Storytelling
With a background in visual storytelling, Andrés Bronnimann has a unique ability to communicate complex issues with clarity and empathy. During COP28, he worked closely with the delegation from Palau, a nation deeply affected by rising sea levels and climate change, to amplify their stories of resilience, adaptation, and environmental stewardship. Through his storytelling, Andrés brings awareness to the pressing challenges faced by vulnerable regions, shedding light on the human dimensions of climate change. His work embodies the mission of UWC Costa Rica—to cultivate in young people the passion and ability to serve humanity and our planet.
A Growing Network of UWC Alums Advocating for a Sustainable Future
COP28 brought together over 60 UWC alums from diverse regions and fields, each contributing their unique expertise to discussions on renewable energy, conservation, climate justice, and sustainable innovation. Representing UWC’s global reach, alums from various professions attended: scientists, policymakers, environmental advocates, educators, and business leaders, all united by their commitment to creating lasting change.
This diverse group exemplifies the enduring influence of the UWC mission, with alums like Andrés and others working to ensure that climate policies and actions are inclusive, science-driven, and representative of the most affected communities. COP28 was a powerful reminder of how UWC graduates can amplify their impact by engaging in policy-making, storytelling, and on-the-ground advocacy to foster global environmental stewardship.
UWC Costa Rica’s Commitment to Climate Education and Action
The presence of UWC Costa Rica alumni at COP28 reflects the College’s emphasis on experiential learning and sustainability within its International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which encourages students to become active global citizens. Through programs such as Outreach & Innovation and the Agents of Change initiatives, students gain the skills and experience to address complex global issues, from environmental justice to social equity.
UWC Costa Rica is proud to foster an environment where students can connect their academic pursuits with real-world challenges, preparing them to engage in global conversations and take action on issues like climate change. Our alumni’s presence at COP28 highlights the power of this educational model and its potential to inspire change far beyond the classroom.
