Cultivating Global Leaders: Inside Community Day at UWC Costa Rica

At an international boarding high school like UWC Costa Rica, education is about far more than textbooks and rigorous examination preparation. It is about learning to live, lead, and collaborate across cultural boundaries. Recently, the UWC Costa Rica community stepped away from classrooms and laboratories to celebrate Community Day—an annual tradition dedicated entirely to wellness, peer-to-peer connection, and experiential growth.

Community Day takes students and staff off campus for a full day of shared experiences. From sports matches and board games to the first and highly anticipated Just Dance showdown, the day was an absolute celebration of collective identity.

An Elite Global Cohort: Diverse by Design

Events like Community Day are vital because they ground the college’s mission in real-world practice. When young people from vastly different backgrounds share joy in recreational activities, they weave tight-knit relationships and mutual understanding that sustain them throughout their two-year pre-university journey.

This intentional diversity is the hallmark of the UWC Movement. The extraordinary makeup of the current 2026-2027 Cohort offers a distinctly global environment for students:

  • A Diverse Student Body: A total of 196 students attend UWC Costa Rica this academic year. This creates a highly selective learning environment.
  • 63 Nationalities Represented: The campus truly reflects the world’s plurality of voices, bringing a global perspective to every single conversation.
  • An International Geographic Balance:
    • 35% of the student body comes from Europe.
    • 27% of the student body comes from Latin America & the Caribbean (including 16 Costa Rican students, making up 8% of the total student body)
    • 19% of the student body comes from Asia
    • 10% of the student body comes from Africa
    • 9% of the student body comes from North America

This unparalleled international exposure prepares self-funded, fee-paying students to become sophisticated global citizens, fully comfortable operating in multinational environments.

A Foundation Built on Well-Being and Excellence

The educational model at UWC Costa Rica places individual and collective well-being at the core of the educational experience. The Residential Life & Wellness team—which includes licensed psychologists, nurses, paramedics, and professional educators—works year-round to maintain a safe, equitable, and highly supportive environment.

By taking time to pause, recharge, and intentionally build a community identity, students practice the core institutional values of Empathy, Reciprocity, and Accountability. They build the psychological resilience required to balance a demanding academic curriculum, like the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), while thriving as independent, proactive change-makers.
