Legal Amazon Consortium Partners with UWC Following Historic International Mission to Costa Rica

In an era where global cooperation is vital to solving our planet’s most pressing ecological challenges, education emerges as the ultimate catalyst for systemic change. Recently, UWC Costa Rica became the epicenter of a historic step forward in global philanthropy and educational innovation.

We had the distinct honor of welcoming a distinguished international delegation from the Legal Amazon Consortium and the Education Secretariats of the Amazonian states.

A Visionary Project for the Youth of the Amazon

This unprecedented initiative represents a monumental horizon for education in the region. The project is designed to connect the youth of the Amazon with an international educational experience centered around leadership, sustainability, cultural diversity, and global citizenship.

The scale of this strategic alliance is historic. The initiative is expected to mobilize initial investments estimated at $1 billion, with the potential to scale up to $1.5 billion by 2027. This positions the endeavor as one of the largest and most transformative educational infrastructures ever planned for the Amazon region.

Why UWC Costa Rica Anchors this Global Expansion

The delegation’s choice to visit UWC Costa Rica was deliberate. Costa Rica is globally celebrated for its robust public policies centered around environmental protection, sustainable development, and human rights. Furthermore, our institution provides a living blueprint for scaling educational models without losing mission alignment.

As UWC Costa Rica manages its own responsible transition to our brand-new campus in San Isidro de Heredia, we are uniquely positioned to offer valuable insights into institutional growth. The delegation spent their time analyzing our:

  • Governance and Financial Frameworks: Understanding how a robust scholarship fund and institutional alliances sustain an intentionally diverse student body.
  • Bioclimatic and Sustainable Architecture: Witnessing how our green building strategies remain in perfect harmony with our tropical context.
  • Experiential Learning Model: Observing how students learn from nature and from each other through community engagement and rigorous academic frameworks.

“We chose to visit Costa Rica because it has a public education system similar to ours and because it will be the first place where UWC is expanding toward a second campus within the same country.” — Vanessa Duarte, Executive Secretary of the Legal Amazon Consortium

A Symbiosis of Education and Environmental Regeneration

The future Amazonian campus will serve as a hub for multicultural exchange, continuous teacher training, and international curriculum development, bringing the core UWC values into a vital global ecosystem.

Reflecting on the visit, the regional Education Secretaries highlighted that the impacts of this model reach far beyond traditional classroom walls. Education is an agent of social transformation; by immersing students in an environment that values reciprocity and accountability, a symbiosis occurs where both the local community and the institution elevate each other. The future Amazon unit is poised to become a thriving center for talent production, educational innovation, and global integration.

Living Our Shared Mission

At UWC Costa Rica, our daily focus is to fulfill our mission: To cultivate in young people the passion and ability to serve humanity and our planet—learning from nature and from each other for a lifetime.

We are incredibly proud that our campus, our staff, and our community can serve as a beacon of inspiration for this monumental expansion. We look forward to watching the UWC movement grow in South America, making education an undeniable force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.
