Why Do We Say “Alum” Instead of “Alumni”: Language for an Inclusive Community

Language plays a vital role in shaping how communities interact, grow, and honor individual identities. Across educational institutions worldwide, various terms are used to refer to former students. However, understanding the distinctions behind these words helps ensure that communication remains intentional and inclusive.

Understanding the Terminology

A key component of this effort is the deliberate transition away from traditional gendered terms like “alumni” toward gender-neutral alternatives such as “alum” and “alums”. To understand this choice, it helps to examine the Latin roots traditionally used in education.

Historically, graduation terminology relies on strict gender divisions:

  • Alum: Gender-neutral / Alums: Gender-neutral, mixed plural.
  • Alumna: Feminine singular / Alumnae: Feminine plural.
  • Alumnus: Male singular / Alumni: Masculine plural.

Prioritizing Inclusion and Diversity

UWC Costa Rica is diverse by design, bringing together young people from over 70 nationalities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Within this intentionally diverse community, individuals possess unique identities and preferred pronouns.

By adopting alum and alums (gender-inclusive), we align with our values of empathy and reciprocity. This terminology respects all individuals, creating an inclusive space that acknowledges every graduate without forcing them into traditional gender binaries.
