Impact Report Showcase | We are thrilled to announce that UWC Costa Rica has been awarded the prestigious Bandera Azul Ecológica in the Climate Change category!

In complete alignment with our Sustainability Framework, this significant achievement is a testament to our unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and our mission to cultivate in young people the passion and ability to serve humanity and our planet.

A Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

The journey to this milestone involved a collaborative effort from students, staff, and the broader community. By meticulously collecting data on our institution's performance across nine key parameters, we identified areas for improvement and implemented targeted strategies.

Achievements

  • Water Conservation: We reduced water consumption by 25,000 liters (0.8% compared to the baseline year).
  • Waste Management: We've significantly reduced our footprint using systematic waste weighing and innovative recycling technologies like Resin8.
  • Sustainable Purchasing: We've established rigorous criteria for sustainable procurement and switched to more eco-friendly products across various departments.
  • Climate Adaptation: We've developed a comprehensive emergency plan to mitigate the impacts of climate-induced emergencies.
  • Carbon Offset: We've actively engaged in carbon offsetting activities, including tree planting, soil regeneration projects, and river and ocean clean-ups.

A Foundation for the Future

As we celebrate this achievement, we recognize that our journey towards sustainability is far from over. Our next ambitious goal is to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2028. This will require continued dedication, innovation, and collaboration from our community.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff, mainly our Cleaning, Maintenance, and General Services teams, for their tireless efforts. Their commitment to sustainability has been instrumental in making this milestone possible.

Let's continue to inspire positive change and create a more sustainable future for future generations.
